From a joint family to the family of medal-won athletes: the life of the champion
The major glimpse of the year 2021 in sports is the Olympics held in Tokyo. The Olympics, which was planned for 2020 itself was postponed just because of the outbreak of COVID 19 virus in the world. From the total Olympics season, India has bagged 7 medals from various items. But India has received just one gold in the entire season, in Men’s Javelin Throw by Neeraj Chopra. Neeraj Chopra, the 23 year old charming athlete of India is the first Indian in the history to get a gold medal in track and field at the Olympics. Also, he is the second Indian to get an individual gold medal from the Olympics, after Abhinav Bhindra. His victory is considered as the moment which completed the
dream of India to win gold in athletics. Chopra brought the medal with a throw of 87.58 m, in his second final round. But, his personal record is 88.07 m at the Indian Grand Prix 3, on march 5, 2021. Ever from his starting as an athlete, Neeraj Chopra has created many records with the javelin. He possesses the record of under-20 world level, from 2016 itself. The throw gave global light on him, at the age of 19, with the throw at 86.48 m. Also he has bagged many medals including Commonwealth games (2018), Asian Games (2018). He has finished on top in 2017 Asian Championships and has received Arjuna Award in 2018 itself.
Born in Khandra district of Haryana, Chopra belong to a joint family, with a strong agricultural background. His family includes nearly 17 members, with no strong financial background. From the childhood perios itself he was filled with naughtiness and was a problem maker for his parents. Also, he was an obese child, and was forced to start sports just to reduce his weight. Initially, his uncle who took him to the Shivaji Stadium in Panipat for practice took him to choose running as a method for his weight loss. But, Chopra saw some people practicing javelin throw in the stadium, and had love at first sight on it. The turning point of his life started there, which gave him a handful of medals, government job and also a path to get space in school textbooks.
Even under critical financial situations of the family, Neeraj Chopra got a way towards the medals through his successful and dedicated athletic life. From the debut matches itself, Chopra holds in the top positions by his record breaking throws. Currently he is working in army as Naib Subedar, from 2017 onwards. He also has undergone through arthroscopic surgery on the right elbow, in 2019. Many people then stated that his record breaking career is in risk after this surgery, but he hero has came back again with a full form of action, after a break of almost one year. The full fledged dedication that he gave after the surgery brought the gold medal for him in his debut Olympics itself.
