Omicron: Threats and challenges by new COVID variant

The COVID-19 has shaken all the parts of the world, for the past two years. Now, when almost all the countries are slowly coming back, the virus again creates threat, through its new variant, Omicron. Many countries now find the new variant, and are again going back to threat of the pandemic. The omicron also forces the governments to impose restrictions and stop its borders again, to prevent more spreading.

The researchers opine that the omicron have more capacity for spreading when compared with previous variants of COVID-19. Also, they opine that the spike protein of the virus have a large number of transformation, which makes omicron quite unusual than others.  Till now, more than a dozen people are found affected with omicron variant, in Canada only. Also, the studies say that the variant has the power to surpass the vaccination, used for previous versions.

One of the senior researchers in China, Youchun Wang, found that the omicron found in South Africa has more ability to resist the immunity power of people. He further states that the omicron has more resistance power even in people who were previously affected with COVID. However, he says that average protection level of ED50 will be better to rest omicron to an extent. He further says that people, who are vaccinated in less than six months, or people, who came out of infection in the same period may have antibodies for resisting omicron.  Wang is the vice chairman of Medical Microbiology and Immunology of Medical Association, China. He opines that omicron is a reminder to the health systems of the world, to be more careful towards the pandemic.

Along with this, many people, who study about omicron suggest for a third dose or booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine, for better immunity against omicron. But, even though it is, many detailed studies are again needed to know more about the variant and its strength. To that period, the researchers request all parts of the world to strengthen their protection methods, for decreasing the level of destruction the variant may create.

Details on omicron studies

One of the details on studies about Omicron was out on Saturday, by Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The study was carried out by Sheba Medical Center and Central Virology Laboratory of the Health Ministry of Israel. They conducted a study by 20 samples from each – who taken two doses in last five-six months, and who have taken booster dose or third dose. In this study, they have found that the people who have taken only two vaccines will have less resistance to omicron, when compared to the booster dose. The study says that booster dose will surely improve resisting power against omicron, which is more spreadable than Delta variant. Also, it opines that taking only two doses will not give protection from omicron, since it has more ability to resist these two doses.
