Govt. Planning to rename AIIMS?
A list of names have been put forward by most of the 23 AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) after the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare asked proposition from them regarding that matter. In addition, the government has strengthen up for the proposition for giving particular names to each and every AIIMS, comprising the Delhi AIIMS, on the basis of names of freedom activists, regional heroes or monuments in that particular area or their particular topographical identity.
The authorities explained that AIIMS that are currently in working state as well as the ones which are under the PMSSY (Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana) are recognized by their general name and identified according to its location. The Union Health Ministry has set up a proposal to name all 23 AIIMS. Moreover, suggestions were taken for naming the different AIIMS across India.
Most of the health institutes have proposed three or four names including an explanation for the reason for the name to be given. The 6 new AIIMS are Bihar (Patna), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal), Chhattisgarh (Raipur), Odisha (Bhubaneshwar), Uttarakhand (Rishikesh) and Rajashthan (Jodhpur) were accepted in PMSSY Phase 1 and are functional entirely.
In 10 institutes classes of MBBS as well as outpatient department (OPD) has began out of 16 AIIMS that were accepted between 2015 and 2022. On the other hand, MBBS classes have started in other two institutes. The development for the rest 4 institutes is at various levels.
