How Young Boys Can Be Advocated for Menstrual Health

When we talk about menstrual health, the focus is often on girls and women. However, creating true change requires involving everyone—including young boys. Breaking the taboo around menstruation is not just a “women’s issue”; it is a societal challenge. By educating and empowering boys to understand menstruation, we can build a more supportive, respectful, and inclusive community.

Why Should Boys Learn About Menstruation?

Menstruation is a natural biological process, yet it is surrounded by stigma and silence. Boys who grow up without awareness may unintentionally reinforce stereotypes, shame, or discrimination. On the other hand, boys who understand menstrual health can:

  • Treat girls with empathy and respect.

  • Break down harmful taboos and myths.

  • Support their sisters, friends, and classmates during menstruation.

  • Grow into men who advocate for gender equality and health rights.

How Can Boys Become Advocates?

  1. Education First – Schools and families should include boys in menstrual health education sessions. Knowledge is the foundation of advocacy.

  2. Normalize Conversations – Boys can help make menstruation a normal topic of discussion, free from jokes or embarrassment.

  3. Support Peers – Something as simple as offering understanding to a classmate in need can create a safe environment.

  4. Challenge Stigma – When boys speak against period shame or restrictions, they inspire others to do the same.

  5. Be Allies in Action – Supporting access to sanitary products and spreading awareness in communities shows true leadership.

The Way Forward

For menstrual health advocacy to be successful, we must raise boys to see periods not as a taboo but as a fact of life. When boys grow up to be fathers, brothers, colleagues, and leaders who support menstrual health, society as a whole benefits.

At PAD India, we believe menstrual health is a shared responsibility. By involving young boys today, we are building a generation that will stand for dignity, equality, and change tomorrow.
