What is Gender Equality and why it is important?
Gender Equality is a very important subject in the world from a very long time. It affects everyone – male, female, trans and any gender, they may be children and families.
What is Gender Equality?
Gender equality is a basic right of a human being. The right to be treated equally in the society.
Every one in this world desire to be treated respectfully but still every day half the population is under-apricated, disrespected, discriminated and mainly treated unequally. It is a well-known fact that we live in a society of male domination where the literacy rate of male is higher than a woman or the gender pay gap of a male is higher than women even when they are giving equal results in a same job. In a developing country like India this discrimination between a male and female is started from the very beginning for a person’s live, if a boy is born it is considered to be a blessing and if a girl is born it is considered to be a burden- a burden who they have to get rid of as soon as she is eligible for marriage. All these in justice affects a mind in both physical and phycological manner.
Even we can see the stereotype roles of male and female in movies and advertisements. A male is considered to be Emotional control, Risk taking, Dominant, Self-reliance, Winning, physically active, standing upright, Bodies are control, etc. whereas a female portrayal in many movies are- Shy, Obedient, Rich in cultural value, not alert, Body controlled, Dress like a child, Playful, Seductive, etc.
Education inequalities.
When it come to the education a boy’s education is considered as an investment as he will grow and take care of their old aging parents where as a girl’s education is more of an unnecessary expense as she will mostly grow to become a housewife and if a family cannot afford education, they will always give preference to the boy This is still a view of many individuals in our society towards a girl child.
Gender pay gap:
After all the struggle and hard-work when a women get a job, she expects to be paid well but at this stage of life also they face discrimination. On an average a man makes 12% more than a woman for a same job in most of the private companies. This discrimination is mostly because of a thinking that a women might leave the company as they will get married or be pregnant at some point.
Why is Gender equality important?
Gender equality is a necessary right that should be given to the hole population. By denying this right we waste half of the world’s human potential. It is a human right issue by deny them we take away their chance to life to the fullest, stop them from growing and learning.
It is very important for us to break such stereotype roles as when we all will get equal opportunities and equal rights the whole nation can grow together into a well-educated, independent country.
How can we stop it?
Here are some basic goals to achieve if we want this gender inequality to end:
