Stanley Schachter, an American socio-psychologist, stated in his two-factor theory of emotion that emotions are a response to a stimulus, which can be a physical arousal, which our brain cognitively labels as a physiological response, resulting in an emotion.

Physical arousals can be subjective feelings, which are emotions an individual can feel.

A physiological response, on the other hand, is the activation of various centers in our brain that leads to our body’s automatic reaction to a stimulus, causing a variety of responses ranging from fear to anxiety, happiness, and sadness.

The final component is the behavioral response which is actual emotions that play a major role in building our body language. Various factors influence these emotions such as the place we live, and the people we are surrounded by play an important role in how we express and interpret emotions.

 

Here are the five main types of emotions:

  • Happiness

 

Happiness is a positive emotion that people appreciate because it makes them feel good. We tend to smile and laugh when we are happy and feel like we are on cloud nine.

You are content when you are:

  • When you are close to someone and feel connected to them
  • When something good happens, such as getting the job you wanted or getting into the college you wanted to attend.
  • You’re finally doing something you’ve always wanted to do.

We all experience and go through the feeling of sadness, which feels like a lump in our throat. This can be caused by various events such as regret, rejection, and loss, but there are times when you do not understand why you are sad.

Sadness can be difficult to overcome, but here are some coping strategies:

  • Talking to someone with whom you are comfortable, opening up to someone, and not bottling up your emotions is a great way to feel light-hearted and it can also help you to overcome the feeling of grief, loss, or any situation of sadness.
  • Spend time with your friends and family.

  • Have a change of mind by doing things to keep you away from thinking.
